 Zachary P. Smith是美国麻省理工学院(MIT)化学工程系Assistant ProfessorJoseph R. Mares职业发展协会主席。2014年毕业于德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校获得化学工程专业博士学位;2014-2016年加州大学伯克利分校无机化学系做博士后;2016-MIT化学工程系Assistant ProfessorSmith教授的研究重点是聚合物和多孔材料的合理设计,合成和表征,用于与节能分离相关的清洁技术应用。曾在Nature MaterialsAngewandte Chemie International EditionJournal of Materials Chemistry A等著名期刊发表高水平论文30余篇.

报告内容:

The chemical and petrochemical industries consume nearly 30% of global energy use, nearly half of which is a result of chemical separations.  A major opportunity exists in identifying more efficient, productive, and environmentally friendly processes that operate in a continuous fashion.  One attractive possibility is membrane-based separations, but significant materials challenges exist in designing membranes that can selectively distinguish between molecules with sub-angstrom differences in size and nearly identical thermodynamic properties.  To survey these challenges and describe emerging opportunities, a brief overview of the current state-of-the-art in membrane-based materials and applications will be presented.  Next, design strategies will be presented for overcoming current materials limitations by using new polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that have unprecedented solubility and diffusion selectivities.  Using a combination of techniques from chemical synthesis, materials characterization, and transport characterization, the aim of this presentation is to highlight the exciting interdisciplinary opportunities for scientists and engineers to tackle global.
